Caste Reader
Meant essentially for the students of anthropology, and readers keen on India, this section will explain the Caste Order by deploying some unconventional methods. Most students of the Caste Order would generally know its fundamentals- that the Caste Order is all about hierarchies where all Caste clusters/Varnas and sub-Castes are above some Caste. Also fairly known is the fact that ritual standings of Castes are predestined by birth with divine authorization, and that, internally, the Caste Order is divisive and externally, disparaging.
“How has the Caste Order survived for so long”, we all wonder. The quality of knowledge on this front is very poor as we all tend to deploy conventional methods in understanding Caste. The venomousness of Caste seeps even in people’s tongues and life styles. The society the Caste produces can appear a zoo where within few square miles a host of animal species live on radically different food regimes and follow different life styles. How can humans belonging to the same racial stock and living in a square mile landmass live on radically different food regimes and follow different life styles! I will explain the Caste Order using unconventional methods- food, clothing, housing architecture to name only a few.
Brahman- the author of the Caste Order and its intellectual mentor, is not only institutionally supreme in the Caste’s ritual hierarchy, but also separate in his food habits [Brahman Food], Occupations [Brahman Economy], clothing [Brahman clothing], Gender divide [Brahman Woman], life style [Brahman Life Style] music/dance [Brahman Music] Housing Architecture [Brahman Architecture]. On similar counts, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas, Shudras and Dalits too will be explained.
